La Cattedrale dell'Assunta, Pienza

Pius II dedicated the Cathedral to the Assumption of Mary.

It was built in about three years.

Underneath is the crypt which is entered by an entrance at the side of the Cathedral.

It is in the style of Italian Gothic and based on the Hallenkirche which Pius had seen in his travels in the Empire.

It is in the shape of a cross with three separate naves. The naves are decorated.

Inside are the following:

Giovanni di Paolo - Madonna con Bambino tra i Santi Antonio Abate, Bernardino, Francesco e Sabina

Matteo di Giovanni - Madonna in Trono con Bambino tra i Santi Bartolomeo, Caterina, Lucia e Matteo

Bernardo Rossellino - Altare del Santissimo Sacramento [below]

Lorenzo di Pietro (detto il Vecchietta) - Assunzione della Vergine tra i Santi Agata, Callisto, Caterina e Pio [below]

Sano di Pietro - Madonna con Bambino tra i Santi Anna, Filippo, Giacomo e Maddalena [below]

Matteo di Giovanni - Madonna in Trono con Bambino tra i Santi Agostino, Girolamo, Martino e Nicola [below]

Also are a number of inscriptions.
